POSITION ADVERTISEMENT FOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE III
in the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division, Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
University of Miami’s Cooperative Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an opportunity for a salaried, full time WordPress web developer with data visualization expertise (Research Associate 3) to work in Miami or remotely, supporting NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory’s Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
This RA 3 will work in partnership with NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary system as well as the NOAA Integrated Ecosystem Assessment program. This position will work with a team to create web-enabled data visualization tools in an ecosystem context for a variety of resource management related projects.
Responsibilities include:
Web development
- Create and maintain a highly customized WordPress-based site architecture for the display of complex scientific data to non-technical audiences.
Project trend analysis and content creation
- Write, update and maintain front end project content in collaboration with project partners.
- Participate in/facilitate project stakeholder meetings to solicit and incorporate project feedback.
Data maintenance and management
- Provide scientific oversight and operation of web-based data display and dissemination capabilities.
- Assist with development and maintenance of NOAA project data policies, templates, and workflow documentation to ensure ongoing compliance with community data quality procedures and data policies.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Science/engineering-based bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
- The request lifecycle and the database structure of WordPress
- CSS
- HTML
- Object-oriented PHP in the context of WordPress
- Javascript in the context of WordPress
- JQuery
- D3
- mySQL
REQUIRED DOCUMENTED DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE WITH:
- Building and maintaining WordPress-based websites.
- Using Git for collaboration (please provide GitHub username).
- Writing WordPress plugins.
- Writing WordPress themes.
- Using tools like Adminer/phpMyAdmin to directly access and modify WordPress databases.
- Using Local or other local WordPress development tools within a Git framework.
- Using Javascript charting libraries, such as Highcharts and Dygraphs, to display complex scientific data.
OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Demonstrated experience to create and maintain formal and informal collaborations with other research groups and institutions.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills with ability to convey science to stakeholders and the public in a compelling fashion.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse stakeholder group including federal agencies, state, community and tribal agencies/organizations, and the academic community.
- Demonstrated self-starter with ability to develop and execute projects independently with limited daily guidance and oversight
- Strong project management skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience dealing with hosted data APIs
- Experience with Javascript-based data visualization in Observable
- Experience with WP-CLI
- Experience with wireframing and mockup tools, such as Figma
