Amnesty International is seeking a skilled and strategic Lead Website Engineer to ensure our global websites are secure, scalable, and optimised for high-impact human rights storytelling. This role is critical to maintaining and evolving the Humanity WordPress Theme, our open-source platform powering Amnesty’s digital presence.
This is a unique opportunity to drive technical excellence in support of Amnesty’s mission, ensuring our digital platforms remain robust, performant, and accessible to millions worldwide.
Please note that this is a full-time role and can be based in either London, Paris, or Madrid.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the development and maintenance of enterprise-grade websites using PHP, WordPress, and React-based Gutenberg blocks.
Drive Amnesty’s technical web vision in collaboration with digital leads, ensuring performance, scalability, and security across platforms.
Strengthen our open-source development community by contributing to documentation and supporting external contributors.
Monitor and resolve technical issues across front-end and back-end systems, including performance bottlenecks and security vulnerabilities.
Champion high coding standards and agile development practices across the digital team.
Maintain and optimise CI/CD workflows, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.
Ensure websites meet accessibility standards (WCAG AA), multilingual support, and cross-browser compatibility.
Collaborate across teams, including IT, InfoSec, and Content, to deliver a seamless and impactful user experience.
