Membership Platform Engineer (WordPress & Billing Systems)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced backend-focused WordPress engineer to support and improve a high-traffic subscription and membership platform. This role focuses on platform reliability, billing systems, payment integrations, and membership access management in a production environment.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with WordPress development, subscription platforms, APIs/webhooks, and troubleshooting complex production issues involving payments and member access.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and extend backend WordPress functionality using PHP
  • Develop and maintain custom plugins and integrations
  • Manage membership, subscription, and access-control systems
  • Build and maintain integrations with payment processors and related services
  • Ensure reliable webhook processing and billing synchronization
  • Troubleshoot production issues involving payments, APIs, and user access
  • Improve platform performance, stability, logging, and monitoring
  • Manage staging-to-production deployment workflows and rollback procedures
  • Optimize database queries and backend performance
  • Document systems and technical processes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members on platform improvements

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of WordPress and PHP development experience
  • Experience with membership or subscription-based platforms
  • Experience integrating payment systems such as Stripe and/or PayPal
  • Experience building and maintaining API and webhook integrations
  • Experience troubleshooting production billing and access-control issues
  • Experience managing deployments between staging and production environments

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with subscription management plugins or platforms
  • Experience with ecommerce platforms and related integrations
  • Familiarity with Cloudflare or similar CDN/security/performance platforms
  • Experience with CRM, analytics, or marketing automation integrations
  • Experience working remotely with distributed teams

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of WordPress architecture and plugin development
  • Strong backend debugging and performance optimization skills
  • Familiarity with secure payment and webhook handling practices
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively in a remote environment
