Junior WordPress Developer

We’re hiring for a dedicated and enthusiastic Junior WordPress Developer to join our team during an exciting phase of growth and evolution. This full-time remote position offers the opportunity to work with a supportive team that values innovation, learning, and technical excellence.

About the Role
While your role will ultimately focus on building new WordPress sites and maintaining our client portfolio, you’ll start by supporting existing projects and maintenance work. This hands-on experience will help you understand our clients and technical stack while we optimize our workflows and strengthen our team processes.

You’ll collaborate closely with our designer and team lead, gaining experience across various aspects of web development, including:

  • Building and maintaining WordPress sites
  • Server management and hosting tasks
  • Technical optimization and problem-solving
  • Client-focused updates and improvements

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop new WordPress websites: Build custom WordPress sites from the ground up, working closely with our designer and team lead to create engaging user experiences. You’ll receive regular guidance and feedback throughout the development process.
  • Implement frontend designs: Create new features and content updates for existing clients, ensuring accurate implementation of design mockups while maintaining consistent user experience.
  • Handle site maintenance: Perform regular plugin and theme updates, testing, and security maintenance for our client portfolio as assigned.
  • Perform cross-browser testing: Take a mobile-first approach to development, ensure responsive design across all breakpoints, and validate functionality across major browsers and devices.
  • Implement SEO best practices: Ensure all sites are built with strong SEO foundations and optimize existing sites for better search engine performance as assigned.
  • Execute technical optimizations: Ensure all sites are built with best practices for performance in mind and identify and resolve performance issues across our client sites as assigned.
  • Ensure accessibility compliance: Ensure all sites are built with WCAG accessibility standards conformance and make existing sites accessible conformant as assigned.

Technical Skills

  • WordPress Development: Good understanding of WordPress core functionality, theme customization, and basic plugin development.
  • Web Development Knowledge: Understanding of responsive development, mobile-first principles, and modern web development best practices.
  • Programming Languages: Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.
  • SEO Knowledge: Understanding of fundamental SEO principles and best practices.
  • Accessibility Knowledge: Understanding of WCAG accessibility standards and best practices
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to debug issues and implement solutions effectively.
  • Learning Mindset: Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and flexibility to adapt to different workflows based on project requirements.

Trial Period Structure
Due to the unique nature of each project we undertake, the first three months will serve as a crucial period to ensure mutual fit and adaptability. This period allows both the team and the new developer to evaluate how well they work together in our dynamic environment.

The first three months will focus on:

  • Learning our existing systems and workflows
  • Handling maintenance tasks and client updates
  • Assisting with ongoing projects
  • Gradually taking on more complex responsibilities

During this period, we’ll assess:

  • Ability to adapt to different project requirements
  • Team collaboration and communication skills
  • Technical problem-solving capabilities
  • Capacity to learn and implement new approaches

Position Details
