Volunteer Tech Operations Manager

The Role

The Offing (theoffingmag.com) is seeking a skilled WordPress generalist to serve as our solo tech ops resource on an ongoing pro bono basis. You’ll own the full technical stack for a lean, respected literary publication — handling everything from day-to-day troubleshooting to vendor management to proactive infrastructure improvements.

This is a low-volume, low-drama engagement. We don’t have constant fires; we need someone reliable who’s available when things come up and sharp enough to keep them from coming up in the first place.

Tech Environment

• CMS: WordPress on WP Engine
• Hosting: WP Engine
• Productivity suite: Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs)
• Team size: Small editorial staff, non-technical (65 folks, global and remote)

What You’ll Own

• Primary point of contact and account manager with WP Engine
• WordPress site health monitoring, updates, and troubleshooting
• Google Workspace administration (email routing, DNS, user management)
• DNS configuration and domain management
• Documentation for common issues so the editorial team can self-serve
• Ad hoc tech consulting as new needs arise

Required Skills

• WordPress admin (themes, plugins, updates, permissions)
• WP Engine or equivalent managed WordPress hosting
• Google Workspace admin
• DNS, MX records, authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC)
• Clear written communication with non-technical stakeholders
